I’m so excited to introduce my latest crochet pattern: the Wrenley Bulky Beanie Pattern and Video Tutorial ✨
This design is part of my growing Wrenley Collection, and just like the original Wrenley Cardi, which can be made as either a vest or a full-sleeve cardigan, as well as the Wrenley Oversized Cardi, each design focuses on beautiful texture, cozy comfort, and simple construction that’s fun to crochet.
And of course, the collection wouldn’t be complete without the Wrenley Hoodie, which uses the same bulky yarn to create an extra warm and cozy piece.
There’s something about this time of year that just makes cozy projects feel extra magical. Warm drinks, soft yarn, comfy sweaters… and of course, a brand-new beanie on your hook!

Row 1: Ch any odd #, sc in 2nd ch, *[(sc, dc), sk] rep from*, sc in last st, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in 1st, *[(sc, dc), sk] rep from*, sc in last, turn.
Rep row 2 until desired length.

Baby (Toddler, Child, Small Adult, Medium / Large Adult)
When determining the size you wish to create, it is essential to know the actual head circumference measurement of the wearer. It is more important to use this measurement when selecting a size, rather than just choosing a size based on the age categories.

Construction
The beanie is worked flat and then the two sides are seamed together. You’ll first create the main body of the hat, and then finish it off with the ribbing. If you prefer a slouchy style, you can easily adjust the height — just keep adding rows until you reach your desired length.

- ch: chain
- dc: double crochet
- pm: place marker
- sc: single crochet
- sk: skip
- sl st: slip stitch
- st(s): stitch(es)
- YO: yarn over
Special Stitches
[(sc, dc), sk]: 1 sc and 1 dc in the same st – worked in the dc of the previous row, sk the next sc of the previous row.
Notes
- Pm on the 1st st to not lose sts.
- The beanie is worked flat then the 2 sides are seamed together.
- Using [(sc, dc), sk] for the body, and single crochet in the back loop only (sc blo) for the band.
- The beginning ch does not count as a st unless specified.
- The stitch count will be displayed as follows: Baby (Toddler, Child, Small Adult, Medium / Large Adult). If there is only one number, it applies to all sizes.
- Rows 3 to 20 (22, 22, 28, 28): means rep from rows 3 to 20 for size Baby, 3 to 22 for size Toddler etc.
Pattern
BODY
Row 1: Starting with a slip knot, ch 29 (35, 37, 41, 43), sc in 2nd ch from the hook – pm in the 1st st here and the 1st st of the next row – move markers up at every row – *(sc, dc) in next ch, sk next ch, rep from * across to last ch, sc in last ch, turn. 28 (34, 36, 40, 42) sts
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in 1st st, *(sc, dc) in next st, sk next st, rep from * across remaining sts to last st, sc in last st turn.
Rows 3 to 9 (10, 11, 12, 14): Rep row 2. Do not fasten off.
- If you would like a taller (slouchy) hat, adjust length here by adding rows.
- The band is crocheted directly onto the body.
BAND
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in 1ST st and across remaining sts, turn. 28 (34, 36, 40, 42) sts
Row 2: Ch 6 (7, 9, 10, 11), sc in 2nd ch from the hook and remaining chs, at the body’s edge, sk the 1st sc and work 1 sl st in each of the next 2 sc of the body’s edge, turn. 5 (6, 8, 9, 10) sts
Row 3: Sk the 2 sl sts of the body’s edge, sc blo across, turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc blo in the 1st st and remaining sts, at the body’s edge, work 1 sl st in each of the next 2 sc of the body’s edge, turn.
- Rep rows 3 and 4 across the body, finishing on a row 3 (note: the last row sk only 1 sl st of previous row).
- Do not fasten off.
SEAMING
- Fold the beanie, align each st of the band, insert the hook through both sts of the band, sl st across to seam the band up to the body. Fasten off with a long tail.
- Keep the beanie folded the same way to continue with the seaming.
- (RS) With yarn and needle, using a mattress stitch, seam the sides of the body from the band to the crown.
- After joining the sides, weave the needle and yarn through every other stitch around the top of the beanie and tighten to close the crown. Go around a couple more times to secure the crown.
- Fasten off, attach pom pom and weave in ends.
