Hi, I’m Sabine — the maker behind Mermaids and Hooks!

My love for yarn started way back in childhood. My grandmother taught me how to knit, and my great auntie showed me how to crochet. Together, we’d spend hours making tiny clothes for my Barbies — I thought it was absolutely magical!
Fast forward to my twenties, I picked up my hook again and made a wild, colorful pineapple cardigan. It had so many yarn ends that I ended up sewing a full lining inside! It was a little chaotic, but I wore that cardigan proudly for years. Looking back, it was my very first big crochet adventure and quite the statement piece!.
Then in 2015, my son had a school fundraiser, and I bid on a basket full of yarn and knitting needles — and of course, I won. That basket rekindled my creative spark. I started knitting again, but soon discovered that crochet was much more forgiving when I made mistakes (which was often!). Thanks to countless YouTube tutorials, I fell head over heels for crochet.
I started small with scarves and beanies, then made my second-ever cardigan — and I was completely hooked.
My friends adored the pieces I made and encouraged me to sell them, but handmade items take a lot of time and love (not to mention yarn!). So instead, I decided to focus on designing patterns so other makers could bring my ideas to life too.
After months of learning and taking online courses, I opened my Etsy shop and released my very first pattern. I set a goal of 100 sales by Christmas… and ended up reaching 200! That moment made me realize just how much I love this creative journey.
Designing crochet patterns is like solving a beautiful puzzle — working out the stitches, adjusting rows, sometimes frogging (a lot!), and finally seeing the design come to life. It’s not always easy, but it’s always rewarding.
I’m so excited to share my patterns with you and to be part of your crochet adventures. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced maker, I hope my designs inspire you to create pieces you’ll love for years to come.
