I wanted to create a crochet bag that had that modern, knit-like texture — but in a larger, more functional size you could actually use every day.

At the same time, I kept coming back to the idea of wooden handles. I loved how they instantly add structure and give a crochet bag that clean, put-together look while still keeping it handmade and unique.

So the Brooklyn Bag was born.

It combines that beautiful textured stitch with sturdy wooden handles and transforms into a spacious, easy-to-carry crochet bag that fits so much more. Perfect for when you need a little extra room without sacrificing style.

This crochet bag pattern was originally designed with T-shirt yarn, which gives the bag structure and durability —perfect for everyday use.

T-shirt yarn is a thick, flat, ribbon-like textile made from jersey knit fabric (typically cotton or cotton-polyester blends), often repurposed from factory waste. It is exceptionally soft, flexible, and stretchy, making it ideal for fast, sturdy, and sustainable projects like baskets, rugs, and handbags

However, if you don’t have t-shirt yarn on hand, you can absolutely substitute it with Lion Brand Cover Story Lazy Days, which is very soft, slightly shiny, and durable #6 bulky yarn. It also features a modern, tubular “chainette” construction with a soft 100% polyester filler.

HERRINGBONE SINGLE CROCHET – HBsc:

Insert the hook through the vertical bar of the previous st and into the next st, YO, draw up a loop, YO and pull through all 3 loops on the hook.

HERRINGBONE SINGLE CROCHET 3 TOGETHER – HBsc3tog:

Insert the hook through the vertical bar of the previous st and into the next st, YO, draw up a loop, *insert the hook in the next st, YO and draw up another loop, repeat from * one more time, YO and pull through all loops 5 on the hook.

REVERSE SINGLE CROCHET – rsc:

Bring your yarn to the front of your work, insert the hook from back to front through both loops of the next st, YO and draw up a loop, YO and pull through both loops on your hook. Note: This isn’t a ‘normal’ rsc but a regular sc worked from back to front.

REVERSE HERRINGBONE SINGLE CROCHET – rHBsc:

Bring your yarn to the front of your work, insert the hook from back to front through the vertical bar of the previous st and through both loops of the next st, YO, pull up a loop, YO and pull through all 3 loops on the hook.

REVERSE HERRINGBONE SINGLE CROCHET 3 TOGETHER – rHBsc3tog:

Bring your yarn to the front of your work, insert the hook from back to front through the vertical bar of the previous st and into the next st, YO, draw up a loop, *insert the hook from back to front into the next st, YO, draw up another loop, repeat from * one more time, YO and pull through all 5 loops on your hook. Note: In the video tutorial, the sts are shown worked by inserting the hook through the vertical bar, under both loops, as well as the 3 rloop. However, inserting in the 3rd loop isn’t necessary but I found the stitches look neater when you do.

Pattern

Starting with a slip knot, attach yarn to the handle with a sc (see pictures):

• With the working yarn on top of the handle, insert hook beneath the handle and pull up a loop.

• From the top of the handle YO and pull through both loops. Sc made.
• Ch 25.

Note: To make a taller bag, just add chs here, bearing in mind that 2 sts will add approximately 1″.

• Pm in 7th, 13th and 19th ch from the hook.
• Making sure the chain is not twisted, attach ch to the second handle with a sc, turn.

Row 1: Ch 1, sl st in 1st sl st and across to marker, sc in marked st, HBsc to marker and in marked st, sl st to end, sc on handle, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sl st in 1st sl st and across to marker, rsc in marked st, rHBsc to marker and in marked st, sl st to end, sc on handle, turn.

Rows 3 to 12: Repeat rows 1 and 2 five more times.

• To make the bag wider add rows here, bearing in mind that 2 rows will add approximately 1″.

DECREASE

• Pm on the 25th st from the hook.
• The decrease is done by working 3 sts together: one st on either side of the st marker plus the marked st.
• Continue to move markers up as you work each new row.

Row 1: Ch 1, sl st in 1st sl st and across to marker, sc in marked st, HBsc to st before marker, HBsc3tog – move marker to decreased st, HBsc to marker and in marked st, sl st to end, sc on handle, turn. (47)

Row 2: Ch 1, sl st in 1st sl st and across to marker, rsc in marked st, rHBsc to st before marker, rHBsc3tog – move marker to decreased st, rHbsc to marker and in marked st, sl st to end, sc on handle, turn. (45)

Rows 3 to 12: Repeat rows 1 and 2 five more times. (25)

• Fasten off and weave in ends.
