The Inspiration Behind This Crochet Bag Pattern
I had just finished my Brooklyn Crochet Bag, and I knew I wanted to design another crochet bag that felt modern, timeless, and just a little bit different.
That’s when I found these gorgeous rectangular wooden handles—and everything clicked.
From there, I chose the Herringbone crochet stitch because it creates such a clean, knit-like texture while still being simple to work up. As a result, you get a bag that looks fancy and eye-catching but is still totally approachable to make.
Above all, I wanted this crochet bag pattern to feel fun and satisfying from start to finish.
The Yarn
This crochet bag pattern was designed with T-shirt yarn, which gives the bag structure and durability —perfect for everyday use.
T-shirt yarn is a thick, flat, ribbon-like textile made from jersey knit fabric (typically cotton or cotton-polyester blends), often repurposed from factory waste. It is exceptionally soft, flexible, and stretchy, making it ideal for fast, sturdy, and sustainable projects like baskets, rugs, and handbags
However, if you don’t have t-shirt yarn on hand, you can absolutely substitute it with Lion Brand Cover Story, Lazy Days, which is very soft, slightly shiny, and durable. It also features a modern, tubular “chainette” construction with a soft 100% polyester filler.

Herringbone double crochet (HBdc):
Yarn over, insert your hook in next st, yarn over, pull loop through stitch and through first loop on hook, yarn over and pull through one loop, yarn over and pull through remaining two loops.
Herringbone half double crochet (HBhdc):
Yarn over, insert your hook in next st, yarn over, pull loop through stitch and through first loop on hook, yarn over and pull through remaining two loops.

Pattern
Starting with a slip knot, attach yarn to the handle with a sc (see pictures):
- With the working yarn on top of the handle, insert hook beneath the handle and pull up a loop.
- From the top of the handle YO and pull through both loops. Sc made.
MAKE 2
Starting with a slip knot: Attach yarn with a sc on one of the corners of the handle, work 5 sc down the side of the handle, ch 1 (pm in ch-sp), work 12 sc along the width of the handle, ch 1 (pm in ch-sp), work 6 sc on the other side of the handle, turn. (24 sc, 2 ch-sp)
Row 1: (WS) Ch 1, HBhdc in 1st st and across to marker, (HBdc, ch 1, Hbdc) in marked sp (move marker to ch-sp), HBdc to other marker, (HBdc, ch 1, Hbdc) in marked sp (move marker to ch-sp), HBhdc to end, turn. (12 HBhdc, 16 HBdc, 2 ch-sp)
Row 2 – 6: Repeat row 1. Fasten off. (22 HBhdc, 26 HBdc, 2 ch-sp)
BORDER
(RS) Attach yarn on the left hand corner of the work near the handle, ch 1, work 5 sc evenly from the handle to the corner (see picture below), ch 1, *sc to the marker, (dc, ch 1, dc) in ch1-sp, repeat from * once, sc to last corner, ch 1, 5 sc evenly to the handle. (58 sc, 4 dc, 2 ch-sp)
- Fasten off.
SEAMING
- Place the two pieces on top of each other with the right sides facing inward.
- (WS) Attach yarn on the left corner at the ch-sp.
- Working in the back loops only, ch 1 and join the two pieces together using a sl st, aligning each stitch as you go.
- Note: The pattern has been updated, so the seaming method differs from what is shown in the video.
- Fasten off and weave in ends.
- Turn bag right side out…… Et voilà!
