If you love crochet projects that are both stylish and practical, you’re going to fall in love with my Brooklyn Crochet Bag Pattern.

This crochet bag pattern was designed with real life in mind — think farmer’s markets, quick errands, beach days, and casual outings where you want something handmade, roomy, and effortlessly cute.

And if you’ve already made (or love) my Chloe Clutch, this bag is like her bigger, more laid-back sister 💛

✨ The Inspiration Behind the Brooklyn Bag

I wanted to create a crochet bag that had that modern, knit-like texture — but in a larger, more functional size you could actually use every day.

At the same time, I kept coming back to the idea of wooden handles. I loved how they instantly add structure and give a crochet bag that clean, put-together look while still keeping it handmade and unique.

So the Brooklyn Bag was born.

It combines that beautiful textured stitch with sturdy wooden handles and transforms into a spacious, easy-to-carry crochet bag that fits so much more. Perfect for when you need a little extra room without sacrificing style.

Design Details You’ll Love

This bag is all about combining simplicity with thoughtful details:

  • Made using T-shirt yarn
  • Features a textured herringbone stitch for that clean, knit-like finish
  • Larger size — ideal for market runs, shopping trips, or everyday use
  • Sturdy wooden handles
  • Seamless construction worked in one piece

As a result, you get a crochet bag that feels modern, functional, and completely handmade by you.

Supplies Needed

Yarn

This crochet bag pattern was designed with T-shirt yarn, which gives the bag structure and durability —perfect for everyday use.

T-shirt yarn is a thick, flat, ribbon-like textile made from jersey knit fabric (typically cotton or cotton-polyester blends), often repurposed from factory waste. It is exceptionally soft, flexible, and stretchy, making it ideal for fast, sturdy, and sustainable projects like baskets, rugs, and handbags

However, if you don’t have t-shirt yarn on hand, you can absolutely substitute it with Lion Brand Cover Story, Lazy Days, which is very soft, slightly shiny, and durable. It also features a modern, tubular “chainette” construction with a soft 100% polyester filler.

Wooden Handles

I was drawn to rectangular wooden handles for their sleek, structured look. They add that modern touch that instantly makes the bag feel more styled, while still keeping the warmth of something handmade.

That said, this design is easy to make your own — you can absolutely use more rounded handles if you prefer a softer, more relaxed vibe.

From the start, the handles really guided the overall look of the bag. Paired with the textured stitch, they help create a piece that feels sturdy, functional, and effortlessly stylish — something you’ll love reaching for again and again.

Easy & Enjoyable Construction

This crochet bag pattern is designed to be simple, fun to make, and beginner-friendly.

The Brooklyn Crochet Bag is worked seamlessly in one piece, so you won’t be dealing with complicated assembly.

The wooden handles are crocheted directly onto the bag as you work, keeping the construction simple and secure. As you crochet, the structure naturally comes together, making it a relaxing project you can enjoy from start to finish.

Because of that, it’s a great option not only for confident beginners but also for experienced crocheters who want a satisfying, low-stress make.
