There’s something so satisfying about crocheting a cozy beanie — especially when it’s quick, beginner-friendly, and full of beautiful texture. If you’re looking for a crochet project that’s relaxing, stylish, and perfect for gifts, this easy crochet beanie pattern might become your new favorite.
The Wrenley Beanie is part of my growing Wrenley Collection, a series of patterns that focus on beautiful texture, cozy comfort, and simple construction that’s fun to crochet. All of the patterns in the collection share the same tilted pairs crochet stitch that creates a lovely textured fabric, tying the designs together while still giving each piece its own unique style.
The Wrenley Beanie pairs perfectly with the Wrenley Vest or Cardigan as well as the Wrenley Oversized Cardigan, while the Wrenley Hoodie is designed to match the Wrenley Bulky Beanie for the coziest coordinated set.
The first three designs use #4 weight yarn, while the hoodie and bulky beanie are made with #5 bulky yarn for extra warmth and a chunkier look.
Add the perfect finishing touch with your own pom pom or use a faux fur one to make it extra cozy and fun.
The Yarn
For this crochet beanie pattern, I used a #4 medium-weight yarn, and I used Brava Worsted Tweed Yarn: #4 Weight, 170 g / 6 oz, 288 meters / 315 yards, 100% Acrylic. Shown in Wren, Stratus and Mink.
For yarn substitution, I absolutely loved working with Caron Simply Soft Tweed! when creating my Wrenley Vest or Cardi as it was incredibly soft, comfortable, and easy to crochet with.
If you’re looking for a yarn that won’t break the bank, Hobby Lobby Crafter Secrets Big Idea and Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice are both great alternatives. I used Vanna’s Choice for my Emilie Cardigan, and it worked up beautifully.
Another great option is Lion Brand Heartland, which I used for my Wrenley Oversized Cardi. It’s soft, easy to work with, and a great choice for a cozy crochet cardigan.

Construction
This beanie is worked flat and then sewn together at the end. You’ll start with the body of the hat and finish with the ribbing. If you love a slouchy beanie, it’s easy to customize — just keep adding rows until it’s the perfect length for you.

FRONT POST DOUBLE CROCHET – fpdc: YO, insert hook from front to back to front around post, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through the first two loops on the hook, YO, pull through the remaining two loops.
Notes
- Pm on the 1st st to not lose sts.
- The beanie is worked flat then the 2 sides are seamed together.
- Using [(sc, dc), sk] for the body, and front and back post double crochet (fpdc and bpdc) for the band.
- [(sc, dc), sk] means 1 sc and 1 dc in the same st, sk the next st.
- The beginning ch does not count as a st unless specified.
- The stitch count will be displayed as follows: Baby (Toddler, Child, Small Adult, Medium / Large Adult). If there is only one number, it applies to all sizes.
- Rows 3 to 20 (22, 22, 28, 28): means rep from row 3 to 20 for size Baby, 3 to 22 for size Toddler etc.

BODY
Row 1: With the larger hook, starting with a slip knot, ch 41 (49, 53, 57, 61), sc in 2nd ch from the hook – pm in the 1st st here and throughout – *(sc, dc) in next ch, sk next ch, rep from * across to last ch, sc in last ch, turn. 40 (48, 52, 56, 60) sts
Row 2: (WS) Ch 1, sc in 1st st, *(sc, dc) in next st, sk next st, rep from * across remaining sts to last st, sc in last st turn.
Rows 3 to 12 (13, 15, 16, 17): rep row 2. Do not fasten off.
- If you would like a taller (slouchy) hat, adjust length here by adding rows.
- The band is crocheted directly onto the body.
- Fpdc 2 means work 1 fpdc in each of the next 2 sts.
BAND
Row 1: With the smaller hook, ch 1, hdc in 1st st and across remaining sts, turn. 40 (48, 52, 56, 60) sts
Row 2: Ch 1, dc in the 1st st, *fpdc 2, bpdc 2, rep from * to last st, dc in last st, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, dc in 1st st, *bpdc 2, fpdc 2, rep from * to last st, dc in last st, turn.
Sizes Baby and Toddler fasten off with a long tail for seaming.
Row 4: Rep row 2.
Sizes Child and Small Adult fasten off with a long tail for seaming.
Row 5: Rep row 3. Fasten off with a long tail for seaming.
SEAMING
- Fold the beanie and seam the sides together from the band up using a mattress stitch (the seaming is done with the right side facing out).
- After joining the sides, weave the needle and yarn through every other stitch around the top of the beanie and tighten to close the crown.
- Fasten off, attach pom pom and weave in ends.
